Jharkhand Governor M. O. H. Farooq has invited BJP's chief ministerial candidate Arjun Munda to take oath on 11th September at 11:00 am. The Governor has also asked Munda to prove his majority in the assembly within seven days. Mr Munda, who will head at a coalition comprising the BJP, JMM, JDU and AJSU, had staked claim on Tuesday after getting unconditional support from his allies. In a related development, the Union Cabinet recommended revocation of president's rule in the state. Home Minister P Chidambaram said after a meeting of the Union Cabinet in New Delhi, the the Cabinet has made appropriate recommendation to the President based on Governor's recommendation.

The UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi today said that  land acquisition should not lead to loss of fertile agriculture land. Mrs Gandhi at the same time said that new industries  and infrastructure cannot be built  without acquiring land . Mrs. Gandhi said that  land acquisition should be  done in manner  which does  not result in the loss of  large fertile tracts that are  indispensable for the cultivation of the food grains needed to feed the people. She  said that  if the farmers are deprived  of their land  they must be provided with adequate  compensation and  alternative occupation. Mrs Sonia Gandhi was speaking at a function in the capital  after dedicating the Stage-II  of the National Thermal Power Project in Dadri.

The Union Cabinet has given its approval for carrying out  caste enumeration as a separate exercise next year.  Briefing media, the Home Minister Mr. P. Chidambaram said that house to house enumeration of castes will be done from June to September next year.  

Parties like RJD, Samajwadi Party and JD(U) had disrupted proceedings in Parliament  during the Budget and Monsoon sessions while pressing for caste census. Government later  set up a GoM to consider all aspects related  the issue .   

The field operations of caste enumeration will be conducted by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner and an expert group will be set up by the government to classify the caste or tribe after enumeration is completed.  The caste wise enumeration was give up as a matter of policy after independence.  The last census when caste wise data was collected was  in 1931.

The Cabinet committee on Economic Affairs has given its approval for revising norms of  Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan,SSA,to bring them in conformity with  the Right to Education. An official release said that revision of the funding pattern for the combined RTE-SSA programme between the Centre and the States  will be in the ratio of 65:35 for all States and Union territories. In the case of eight States of  North East region the existing sharing pattern of 90:10 will continue.

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Programme , a  major flagship programme of the  centre to universalize elementary education in the country  will be the main vehicle for the implementation of the RTE Act.

The President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil has called for promoting greater stability and security in the ASEAN region. Stating that her visit to Laos and Cambodia would further strengthen the relations with the ASEAN countries, the President said, Business and cultural relations with Laos and Cambodia would be strengthened further. She said the three nations have much to gain by cooperating with each other in combating terrorism and extremism.

 

Mrs Patil said as a country coordinator for India in ASEAN, Laos played supportive role for enhancing India’s profile in the region. Addressing the Indian community at the reception held in her honour at Piantiane, Laos, She said the growth would qualitatively transform the economy of the country while improving economic relations with friendly countries including Laos.

Heavy rain wreaked havoc in northern India where major rivers swelled dangerously causing flooding in several areas in the region.

The Yamuna river in the National Capital is flowing above the danger mark following heavy downpour in its catchment areas. The current water level of the river has risen 17 cm above the danger mark. .Talking to AIR, the Chief Engineer of Delhi Flood Control Department , Mr V.P.S Tomar said that water level may rise tomorrow afternoon and expected to cross 206.35 meter. He said that adequate pumping arrangements have been made and regular patrolling of embankments is being carried out.   

In Haryana, around three dozen villages in Yamuna Nagar and Karnal districts have been submerged in water following breaches which occurred on the embankment of Yamuna river.

In Uttar Pradesh about 28 districts are affected with flood in eastern, western and terai regions of the state.

In Uttarakhand, normal life has been disrupted due to incessant rain.  Chardham yaatra route and some other highways are still blocked.

The flood in the Naraynpur district of Chhattisgarh has claimed at least seven lives. The victims include 4 women.

Delhi Police today asserted that elaborate security arrangements are in place for the Common Wealth Games to be held in the national capital from 3rd of next month. Talking to AIR, Delhi Police, PRO Rajan Bhagat said foolproof security will be provided during the Games. He added that apart from Delhi Police Personnel,  Central Paramilitary Forces will also be deployed.

Delhi will play host to over 8500 athletes from 71 countries competing in 17 events during the upcoming Common Wealth Games.

The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today took stock of preparations for the forthcoming commonwealth games. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, the Union Sports Minister Mr. M S Gill said that he informed Dr. Singh that all preparations are on track and the staida are ready for the games.  Dr Manmohan Singh is also likely  to review the preparations for the Commonwealth Games at a high-level meeting tomorrow

The Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Shri Dinesh Bhai Trivedi has said that dengue in Delhi will come under control before Commonwealth Games. In an exclusive interview to AIR, he hoped that inspite of all the problems the Games will be successful.

BSNL today launched an unique programme to empower BPL families in three states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Tamilnadu. Under this programme BSNL will provide free mobile handsets with connection to 1,000 BPL families in each of three states.

In Madhya Pradesh, the death toll has risen to 22 in Dewas bus accident. Over 20 people are reportedly still missing. A passenger bus carrying over 70 people had fell into Bagdi river near Khategaon in Dewas district last night.

The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Malappuram district in Kerala has increased to 25.Two more persons who were on treatment died today at Kuttippuram.

In Orissa, sitting BJP MLA Manoj Pradhan was today sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for six years by a fast track court at Phulbani for a murder during the 2008 communal riots in Kandhamal district. Fast track court-II judge C R Das convicted Pradhan for the murder of Bikram Nayak, a Christian from Budedipada of Tiangia village  on August 26, 2008. The judge also slapped a fine of  15,500 rupees on the convict, representing the communally sensitive G Udayagiri assembly constituency, for setting ablaze houses of people belonging to the minority community and inciting communal violence.   Three more cases are pending against him. Pradhan was a close disciple of Saraswati, whose killing on August 23, 2008, had sparked off large-scale violence in Kandhamal and other parts of Orissa.

Veteran filmmaker D Ramanaidu has been honoured with the Dada Saheb Phalke award for the year 2009 for his outstanding contribution to the world of Indian cinema. Ramanaidu will be presented the award during the International Film Festival of India to be held in Goa in October. The award consists of a 'Swarn Kamal', a cash prize of 10 lakh rupees and a shawl. Born in Karamchedu in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh in 1936, Ramanaidu.  has been a prolific producer of over 130 films in several Indian languages over the last 47 years.

The Indo-Pak pair of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi reached the final of the U.S.Open tennis tournament. The duo scored a  7-6, 6-4 win over Argentine pair of Eduardo Schwank and Horacio Zeballos in the semi-finals yesterday. The Indo-Pak express will now take on the Bryan brothers in the decider.

The Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri Masjid, Dr. Mufti Mohammad Mukaram has said that Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Saturday. In a press released issued in New Delhi , he said that the Moon of Eid was not sighted this evening .

US President Barack Obama has issued an urgent appeal to Terry Jones, pastor of a tiny church in Florida, who is planning to burn copies of the Quran, to call the event off.  In a television interview, the President called it a destructive stunt which could help militants attract further recruits.  He said he hopes that the pastor would cancel the burning plan to mark the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

In Pakistan, at least 10 people were killed and six more injured when a vehicle hit a landmine in the restive Kurram tribal region in the northwest.The condition of three injured is stated to be very serious.

About 20 people were travelling in the vehicle.
