JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy was sworn in as Chief
Minister of Karnataka by Governor Vaju Bhai Vala in Bengaluru this evening. Mr
Kumaraswamy took the oath at a ceremony held on the grand steps of Vidhana
Soudha, the state Secretariat building.
Congress leader Dr.G Parameshwar took oath as the
Deputy Chief Minister. Soon after the announcement of state assembly results,
Congress and JD(S), had come together to form the coalition Government.
In a show of unity, leaders of many non-BJP parties
including Chief Ministers were present at the oath taking ceremony. Addressing
media persons after the swearing in ceremony, Mr Kumaraswamy claimed the
support of 117 MLAs. He said, the floor test to prove his majority will be held
on Friday. On smooth running of the coalition Government, he informed that a
coordination committee will devise a common minimum programme.

Virodhi Diwas and staged protests across the state today
Narendra Modi has congratulated HD Kumaraswamy and Dr Parameshwara on taking
oath as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka. In a tweet, Mr
Modi extended his best wishes for their tenure ahead. Union Home Minister
Rajnath Singh also congratulated them. In a tweet, Mr Singh expressed hope that
state will move forward towards peace, progress and prosperity under the new
Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra
Modi, has approved Universal Service Obligation Fund supported scheme to
provide mobile services at 4,072 tower locations in Left Wing Extremism
affected areas. The Home Ministry has identified locations in inhabited
uncovered areas of 96 districts in ten states.
Briefing reporters on the decisions of the Cabinet
in New Delhi, Union Minister Ravi
Shankar Prasad said, the network will be used by the security personnel
deployed in the naxal affected areas. Under the project, mobile services will
also be provided to residents in unconnected inhabited villages which would
improve the economic activities in the region. He said, the cost of the total
project will be 7,330 crore rupees.

The Cabinet also gave its approval for the
Implementation of a Comprehensive Telecom Development Plan for the North
Eastern Region in Meghalaya. This project will cost 3,911 crore rupees.
Strengthening of telecom network will help in increasing the penetration of
mobile connectivity in Meghalaya resulting in affordable and equitable access
of communication, information and governance to people.
In another important decision, the Cabinet approved
an ordinance to set up the country's first national Sports University in
Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, a bill to
set up the University in Imphal is already pending in Parliament. He said, the
State government has already allocated land for the proposed University. Mr
Prasad said, things will start moving fast once the President signs the

Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, CCEA has
also given its approval for restructuring of balance sheet of Scooters India
Limited, Lucknow (SIL). It will be done by way of reducing the equity of 85.21
crore rupees in the share capital of SIL, held by Government against
accumulated losses. CCEA has also given
its nod for waiving of Penal Interest on Government Loans to Paradip Port
Trust. It also approved waiving of Penal
Interest on Government Loans to Visakhapatnam Port Trust.
Five civilians were killed while over 30 people,
including five BSF personnel, were injured as Pakistan forces continued heavy
shelling along the International Border in Jammu region for the third day.
Heavy mortar shelling by Pakistani Rangers targeted RS Pura, Arnia, Ramgarh,
Samba and Hiranagar sectors as well as Samba and Kathua districts. In retaliation, the BSF inflicted heavy damages on Pakistani troops. Heavy exchanges at some places lasted till this evening.
In the wake escalated tension along the border, a
major chunk of border population has temporarily migrated to safer places.
People have shifted to their relatives and the relief camps set up by the
administration in panchayat ghars, schools, temples, community halls etc.
Arrangements have been made to provide basic facilities at the relief camps.
The injured are being treated at GMC in Jammu the district and other hospitals. So far, 11 people
including two BSF Jawans have lost their lives while around hundred others have
been injured in the Pakistan’s shelling and firing along the International

India today lodged a strong protest with Pakistan
at the loss of life of a seven month old infant in unprovoked ceasefire
violations by Pakistan forces on Monday in Bhimber Sector across the Line of

Affairs Ministry in a statement said, Pakistan's Deputy High Commissioner Syed
Haider Shah was today summoned and strong protest was lodged in the matter. The
Ministry said, it was conveyed that the deliberate targeting of innocent
civilians by Pakistan forces using small arms and high caliber weapons is
highly deplorable and condemnable in the strongest terms. The MEA said, the
targeting of innocent civilians including young children is against all
established humanitarian norms and professional military conduct. It said,

In Tamil Nadu, the death toll in protests against
Sterlite factory in Thuthukkudi has risen to eleven with one more protester
killed in police firing today. Ten protesters were killed yesterday. Our
correspondent reports that attempts were made to attack police forces in Anna
nagar area of Thoothukkudi this evening. Police resorted first to lathi charge
and later to tear gas firing to disperse the crowd. Finally they fired rounds
to the air which resulted in the causality. Meanwhile, persons admitted to the
hospital were visited by several prominent leaders. DMK working president and
Opposition Leader M K Stalin has demanded resignation of Tamil nadu Chief
Minister Edappadi Palanisamy on moral grounds.
BJP today attacked
