Madhya Pradesh state forest department has translocated a tigress from Kanha National Park to Panna National Park on Saturday. The tigress has been sent through road route under the supervision of wildlife doctors, Veterinarians and officials of Kanha National Park management.
For the purpose of translocation, the tigress was tranquilized by wildlife doctors under the guidance of Kanha Tiger Reserve's Regional Director. Various physical parameters of the tigress were recorded and a radio-caller attached to her in the presence of Wildlife experts.
The six-year-old tigress is among the three cubs that survived after their mother died fighting a tiger. These cubs were later housed in a specially-built enclosure in Mukki Circle by Kanha management with a view to exposing them to killing of preys.
The male cub was shifted to Van Vihar, Bhopal about three years ago while the two tigresses had successfully developed natural instinct of killing preys in the enclosure.
It may be mentioned that mother of tiger cubs gives training of killing preys to its cubs and after her death such cubs are sent only to zoos and cannot be released in the wild on their own.
Earlier, sister of this tigress was released in Panna National Park about eight months ago where she has survived successfully. It is perhaps for the first time anywhere in the world that orphaned tiger cubs were trained to kill preys and released in the wild to live a natural life.
It is hoped that this tigress will also multiply its race in Panna National Park and she and her cubs will become a centre of attraction for tourists.
