As the nation fights the COVID-19 pandemic, we begin with a message of precaution to stay safe and protected by following these three simple steps --

Election Commission will announce the schedule for Assembly Elections to be held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry at 4:30 PM today. The states are due for elections in April-May this year. Polls will be held for 294 seats in West Bengal, 234 seats in Tamil Nadu, 140 seats in Kerala, 126 seats in Assam and 30 seats in the Union Territory of Puducherry.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that farmers, processing Units, MSMEs and Start Ups will be the real drivers of an Atmanirbhar Bharat. Addressing a webinar on implementation of Budget in the financial services sector, Mr Modi said, the government's vision regarding the financial sector is very clear. He said, trust, transparency and faith are the cornerstones of the financial sector. Mr Modi asserted that under the NDA government banking and Non Banking sector has undergone sea changes making it much more transparent and reliable.

The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of continued and robust participation of public sector units in the banking and insurance sector in order to ensure universal financial inclusion. Emphasising on the key reforms introduced by the government in the financial sector, he said that the Insolvency and Bankrupty Code has instilled faith in the lenders. He said the leakage free delivery system, merger of small banks, and provision for Asset Restructuring bodies and Development Financial Institution will ensure a robust, vibrant and transparent financial sector in the country. Mr. Modi said the usage of technology has helped the country in achieving unprecedented growth in financial inclusion. He said the country has accomplished the feat of rolling out Aadhar Cards for nearly 130 crore countrymen in addition to opening of Jan Dhan Accounts for 41 crore beneciaries. The Prime Minister said with the existing pace of growth, the FINTECH sector in the country is expected to reach the mark of 6 trillion dollars in the next three years. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur also participated in the webinar.


Preparations are underway for next session of COVID 19 Vaccination for citizens over 60 years of age and those above 45 years of age with comorbidities. In view of this, ongoing sessions of vaccination will not take place on Saturday and Sunday in wake of IT system transition from Co-Win 1.0 to Co-Win 2.0. The COVID vaccination was launched on 16th January this year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Health Ministry said, the country wide Vaccination exercise is being exponentially expanded to include those above 60 years of age and those above 45 years with co-morbidities from 1st March this year. The Ministry said, the States and UTs have been already informed about this transition. More than one crore 34 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to the beneficiaries in the country so far. Union Health Ministry said that a total of eight lakh one thousand 480 doses of vaccines have been given to health care and frontline workers in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the country's COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 97.17 per cent with recovery of more than 12 thousand 179 patients within 24 hours.  Presently, the total number of active cases in the country is one lakh 55 thousand 986 which comprises only 1.41 per cent of the total positive cases.

A total of 16 thousand 577 new cases were reported in the past 24 hours taking the cumulative positive cases to over one crore ten lakh in the country. The Health Ministry said, one hundred 20 deaths were reported in the same time period taking the toll to over one lakh 56 thousand across the country.


Paying glowing tributes to medical professionals for fighting an unknown enemy during the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the Indian health ecosystem is being seen with new high, new respect and new credibility and called upon the young medical graduates to live up to expectations.

Addressing the 33 rd Convocation of the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University through video conferencing today, the Prime Minister said the world will have greater expectations from the graduating students and they should carry the responsibility on their young and strong shoulders.

The Prime Minister said the COVID-19 pandemic was a completely unexpected occurrence for the world and there was no pre-set formula to fight the virus. In such a time, India not only made a new path but helped others to walk on it. The death rate in the country was the lowest and the recovery rate was high. India is now producing medicines and vaccines for the world, he said.

The learning from the COVID-19 pandemic would help the country to fight other diseases like Tuberculosis as well, the Prime Minister said.

All those who fought the virus have emerged as the heroes of humanity, the Prime Minister said adding India was transforming the entire medical and health care sector.

Pointing out that 70% of the 21,889 candidates from medical, dental and para-medical disciplines conferred with degrees and diplomas were women candidates, Mr Modi conveyed his special appreciation to them.

Mr. Modi said the success of this institution would have made Dr.MGR very happy.

The Prime Minister said the National Medical Commission will bring great transparency and it will also rationalise norms to set up new medical colleges to improve the quality & availability of Human Resources in this sector.

He also called upon medical students to be humorous. He said to be serious and to look serious are two different things and requested the students to keep their sense of humour intact. It will help them cheer up their patients and keep their morale high.

Governor and Chancellor of the University Banwarilal Purohit and Vice Chancellor Sudha Seshaiyyan were also present on the occasion.

It will be the 74th episode of the monthly radio programme. In a tweet, Mr Modi has urged people to share inspiring anecdotes for this program.

The first of its kind Toy Fair 2021 will be held on virtual platform from 27th February to 2nd March. 37 exhibitors from West Bengal are taking part in it.  Rohit Lyon Nyss is one of the exhibitors from Kolkata. Rohit is hopeful that Toy Fair will give him the opportunity to display his products and make children interested in pursuing a hobby. 

On the other hand, Papiya Mukherjee, principal cum assistant regional officer of DAV model school of Durgapur said that they have been using toys as pedagogical tools and they will be showcasing these in the fair.


GDP numbers for the third quarter estimates of the current financial year will be released today. Hopes are high that the economy will show a positive reflection in the wake of the trends put forward by international rating agencies and other estimates. Credit rating agency Moodys revised India's growth estimates to 13.7 per cent in the financial year 2021-22 against 10.8 per cent estimated earlier.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has reiterated that the central bank has projected the country's growth forecast of 10.5 per cent for the next year. He said, the liquidity will continue to be sufficient and the central bank will make available liquidity at the appropriate times. He added that the Apex bank will see that the borrowing programme goes through in a very orderly manner.

"In its 'Global Macro Outlook 2021-22, Moody's said, India's Economy has rebounded quickly from one of the world's longest and most stringent lockdowns. For the current fiscal year, the agency expects the Indian economy to contract by 7 per cent, lower than its previous estimate of 10.6 per cent contraction. The revised numbers came on the back of normalisation of activity and growing confidence in the market with the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines. Meanwhile, speaking on the liquidity management, RBI Governor, Shaktikanta Das said the central bank has several instruments on its table. He said as and when the time is required, RBI will use various tools to inject liquidity. Mr. Das said RBI does not want to create an impediment to the process of revival of economic activity. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said that the success of the Balakot strikes has shown India’s strong will to act against terrorism. On the anniversary of Balakot Air Strikes, Mr Singh saluted the exceptional courage and diligence of the Indian Air Force. He said, the country is proud of our Armed Forces who keep India safe and secure.

Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to the martyrs of the Pulwama attack. Mr Shah said under the leadership of Narendra Modi, the safety and security of the country and the soldiers is paramount. He said, that the Indian Air Force had again made clear the policies of New India against terrorism by responding to the Pulwama terror attack.

In 2019, during the early hours of 26th February, air strikes were conducted on terrorist training facilities in Balakot of Pakistan’s Khyber Paktunkhwa province.

In this operation, a very large number of Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists, trainers, senior commanders and groups of jihadis who were being trained for fidayeen action were eliminated. The air strike was conducted after the terror attack by a Pakistan based terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama on 14th of February 2019 in which 40 soldiers were martyred.


External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar discussed with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi the situation along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh and also issues related to India-China relations. They had a telephonic conversation yesterday which lasted 75 minutes.

Dr Jaishankar referred to the meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister in September last year in Moscow where Indian side had expressed its concern on provocative behavior and unilateral attempts of the Chinese side to alter status quo. He noted that the bilateral relations have been impacted severely over last year.

Noting the completion of disengagement in Pangong Lake area, the Minister emphasized that both sides should now quickly resolve the remaining issues along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry statement on the two Minister's talk, said that the recent disengagement of front-line Chinese and Indian forces in the Pangong Lake area has clearly eased the situation on the ground. The statement also said that both sides have agreed to establish a hotline for better communication and to exchange opinions in a timely manner.


Global terror financing watchdog - FATF has decided to keep Pakistan on its Grey List till June this year, saying Pakistan is yet to complete its action plan to remove blocks in its fight against money laundering and terror financing. FATF said, Islamabad should demonstrate effective implementation of targeted financial sanctions against all designated terrorists and their associates. FATF also said that Pakistan courts must give effective, decisive and proportionate punishment to those involved in terrorism. It also said, Pakistan must have an effective system to deal with terror financing. Once Pakistan completes three unfulfilled tasks, the FATF will verify and take decision on Islamabad's present status in June plenary.


In Madhya Pradesh covid positivity rate increased to 2.3 percent yesterday. The number of active Corona cases in the state is 2435. 

In MP 368 new cases of Corona have cropped up in the state, 201 patients have recovered from infection. 138 new cases have come in Indore and 70 in Bhopal. With two patients succumbing to the infection the death toll increased to 3,859. Meanwhile, Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday urged residents of the state to avoid travelling to Maharashtra due to a surge in Covid- 19 cases in the past one week." Pooja P. In the Union Territory of Puducherry a high level committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of the Lieutenant Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan to monitor and boost the Covid 19 Vaccination activities.

"This 22 members committee includes the Chief Secretary, Health Secretary , other line department secretaries, medical experts and educationists. This committee will assess the implementation process of the Covid 19 Vaccination and adopt strategies to increase the count, since the first phase failing to get the desired results. The second phase will begin from March 1st. 2021. According to the Covid 19 status report today, 9864 persons were vaccinated so far, which includes 9380 health care workers and 484 front line workers. out of 1648 tests tested 20 new cases recorded positive. 23 persons discharged from the hospitals. A total of 194 persons are being treated for the disease. The total recovery rate in the UT stands at 97.83 % and the mortality rate is 1.68%.Chandra Mohan, AIR NEWS, Puducherry."


The Health Ministry of Brazil yesterday signed a contract  to purchase 20 million doses of Covaxin vaccine made by India’s Bharat Biotech.The ministry said the first 8 million doses are expected to arrive in March. Meanwhile Brazil reported 1,541 new COVID-19 deaths yesterday, taking the total fatalities to 251,498. With 65,998 new cases, the South American country has now registered 10,390,461 cases.

Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar has said that the new guidelines for social media intermediaries, OTT platforms and Digital Media will bring uniformity among all in the field of media. Speaking about the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics code notified by the government yesterday, Mr. Javadekar said this will empower the users and will for the first time ensure grievance redressal mechanism for them. The Minister asserted that the new guidelines which have been welcomed by the world community is based on the principle of responsible freedom. The government had yesterday notified the new guidelines based on the principle of soft touch self regulation mechanism for Digital Media, Social Media Intermediaries and OTT platforms in the country. The guidelines will ensure responsible and responsive social media intermediaries whereas it envisages a three tier self regulatory mechanism for the Digital media.

Australia has passed a law, the first of its kind in the world, aimed at making Google and Facebook pay for news content on their platforms. The legislation had been fiercely opposed by the US tech giants, with Facebook blocking all news content to Australians over the row. Facebook agreed to reverse its decision after robust negotiations with the government, which led to changes to the law to address some of their concerns. The law is seen as a test case for similar regulation around the world. Facebook and Google had earlier argued that the law fundamentally misunderstood how the internet works.


Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal today said that National Education Policy has given focus to innovation, entrepreneurship and skill development. Addressing the FICCI Higher Education Summit, Mr Goyal said the policy will make India the knowledge capital of the world. He said, the National Education Policy allows students to be more creative in their chosen fields.


The Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the fact that sports has been given pride of place in the recent National Education Policy. Sports, which was considered an extra-curricular activity earlier is now being treated as part of the curriculum and grading in sports will be counted in the education of the children, he said.

The Prime Minister was delivering the inaugural address of the 2nd edition of Khelo India, winter sports games at Gulmarg through video conferencing.  The 5-day event is being organised at the world famous ski-resort Gulmarg in the north Kashmir's Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir.

He remarked that the number of players participating in this winter games from various states have doubled which demonstrates the increasing enthusiasm towards Winter Games.
