  • Government announces several measures to boost exports; announces revised priority sector lending norms to release additional funds of up to 68 thousand crore rupees.

The Government today announced several measures to boost exports and bring reforms in housing sector. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a new scheme - Remission of Duties or Taxes on Export Product, RoDTEP to incentivise exporters at an estimated cost of 50,000 crore rupees to the exchequer.

Addressing media in New Delhi, the Finance Minister said there will be a fully automated electronic refund route for input tax credits in GST. This will be implemented by the month-end. The move, she added, is aimed at quick and automated refunds of Input Tax Credit.

"Leverage technology to reduce time to export or turnaround time. This is a very important step forward. Technologies further being used so that the time to export that is being taken at each of the ports will come down."

The Finance Minister said RoDTEP will replace the existing incentive schemes and will more than adequately incentivise exporters than the existing schemes put together.

The Minister also announced revised Priority Sector Lending, PSL norms for exporters, which will release an additional funding of 36,000 crore rupees to 68,000 crores to them.

Ms Sitharaman said export finance will be actively monitored by an inter-ministerial working group in the Department of Commerce. She said Export Credit Guarantee Corp, will expand the scope of export credit insurance scheme.

She also announced that Free Trade Agreement Utilisation Mission would be set up to help exporters utilise the concessional tariffs optimally.

Apart from this, annual mega shopping festivals like Dubai Shopping Festivals will be organised in the country.

The Finance Minister announced a 10,000 crore rupee special window to provide last-mile funding for completion of ongoing housing projects.

"A special Window for affordable and middle income housing is being created. In that, a special window will provide the last Mile funding requirements for housing projects which are non NPA and non NCLT projects and are net worth positive in affordable and middle income category to be set up."


The GST Network has decided to make Aadhaar authentication or physical verification mandatory for new dealers from January next year to check malpractices in GST. This was announced by Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi, who heads the Group of Ministers of GST Network. Addressing media in Bengaluru today he said Aadhaar authentication was optional earlier. 

Mr Modi said the decision was taken after noticing in the last two years that there is a good number of fly-by-night operators, who make fake invoices.


In Assam, the final list of National Register of Citizens, NRC with individual status of all the 3 crore 30 lakh applicants was published online today. All those who have applied for inclusion of their names in the NRC list and have a valid Application Receipt Number, ARN, can check their final status online on <<www.nrcassam.nic.in>>. The list bears the names of those who have been accepted as the citizens of Assam, those excluded and persons whose appeals are pending.

The names of over 19 lakh people were excluded from the final NRC list published on the 31st of last month.  The excluded persons would get an opportunity to challenge their exclusion in the Foreigners' Tribunals. 


Opposition members of the Rajya Sabha will chair five of the eight Department Related Standing Committees, DRSCs, administered by the Upper House. Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu yesterday approved the constitution and appointment of chairpersons of the eight Committees under which the ruling BJP has got headship of three Committees.

An official release said Mr Naidu also approved nomination of Rajya Sabha on the 16 DRSCs of Lok Sabha. Constitution and chairpersons of the 16 DRSCs serviced by the Lok Sabha were also approved by Speaker Om Birla.


In Jammu & Kashmir, a senior police official said this evening that no untoward incident was reported from any part of Srinagar or elsewhere in the Valley. Officials said restrictions remained lifted from most of the police station areas in the Valley.

Officials said that 100 percent landlines have been restored in the Valley. They said barring mobile phone connectivity that was restored in Kupwara & Handwara police districts, mobile, lease line and broadband internet services continue to remain snapped in the Valley.


Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said, it is extremely important for a country to have a common language that becomes the mark of its identity in the world. He said Hindi and other Indian languages should grow together. The Home Minister was speaking at a special function in New Delhi on the occasion of Hindi Diwas today.

"मैं दावे के साथ कह सकता हूं दुनिया की कोई भी भाषा ला दीजिए और भारत की कोई भी भाषा को उठा लीजिए सबसे समृद्ध भाषाएँ किसी देश में है तो मेरे भारत की भाषाएं हैं। शासन की भाषा वही होनी चाहिए कि शासन जिसके लिए हो। लोकतंत्र में शासन लोगों के लिए होता है, अगर शासन की भाषा लोग नहीं समझ सकते हैं तो लोकतंत्र का कोई मतलब नहीं।"

Mr Shah called for making Hindi a peoples' movement across India saying that diversity of languages and dialects is the strength of a country. He said, the government will make all out efforts to use Hindi in all sectors including law and justice, science and medicine.

On this day in 1949 the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi written in Devanagari as the official language of the Union. The Home Minister gave away Rajbhasha awards to mark the occasion.


The Government is launching a major programme offering 1000 PhD Fellowships to ASEAN students at IITs in India. The admission portal for the programme is being executed by IIT Delhi.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank will launch the programme in New Delhi on Monday.


BJP president Amit Shah and his party colleagues launched Seva Saptah at AIIMS in Delhi today. They also met sanitation workers and children admitted at the hospital. "Seva Saptah" is being observed to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday on 17th of this month.

Speaking on the occasion, Amit Shah said the Prime Minister has dedicated his life to serving the country, especially the poor. He said it is, therefore, natural that the party should observe Mr Modi's birthday by taking part in various activities aimed at serving society. The exercise will end on September 20.


Home Minister Amit Shah also inaugurated an exhibition showcasing the work done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi today. Photographs of Mr. Modi, right from his childhood to the present, are being displayed in the exhibition. BJP working president JP Nadda and other party leaders were present at the inauguration.


President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated a bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Villeneuve in Switzerland today. The President is on a five- day visit to Switzerland to boost business and cultural ties. The bust was unveiled to mark the visit of Mahatma to Villeneuve in 1931. The inauguration also coincides with 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the nation.

After unveiling the statue, the President said Mahatma Gandhi's ideology of ahimsa, peace and living in harmony with nature is relevant even today.

"Mahatma Gandhi believed in the oneness of humanity. He embraced all cultures, all religions and all peoples. He listen to Hindu religious songs and western classical music with equal ease and understanding."

Our correspondent reports that the idol sculpted by Ram Vanaji Sutar is placed on a high pedestal made of sandstone extracted from Switzerland.

"The idol of Mahatma Gandhi placed next to a massive Geneva lake surrounded by huge mountains in Villeneuve bordering France will remind visitors of  his visit  to the town and his meeting with French writer Rolland Holland. During the unvieling of the idol, a small group of Indians had gathered to welcome the President, who greeted them on arrival. During the inaugural, Bharat maths ki Jai and Mahatma Gandhi ki Jai reverberated the air, followed by impromptu singing of Vishnava janato bhajan which is very dear to Bapu. Sudhindra, AIR News, Switzerland."


The US today confirmed that Hamza bin Laden, son of terror group al-Qaeda's founder Osama bin Laden, is dead. In a statement, the White House said Hamza was killed in a US counter-terrorism operation in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. The statement said the loss of Hamza not only deprives al-Qaeda of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father, but undermines important operational activities of the group.

Hamza's last known public statement was released by al-Qaeda's media arm in 2018. In that message, he had threatened Saudi Arabia and called on the people of the Arabian peninsula to revolt.


In Saudi Arabia, drone attacks sparked fires at two Saudi Aramco oil facilities today. Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for the attack. Interior ministry said, huge palls of smoke rose into the sky after the pre-dawn attacks on Abqaiq and Khurais, two major Aramco facilities in eastern Saudi Arabia. The attacks follow a spike in regional tensions with Iran.


A Taliban delegation has held talks with Russian special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, in Moscow to discuss the recent developments on the peace process. This was stated by Taliban's spokesman Sohail Shaheen as per TASS news agency.

A spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry told the news agency that Russia believes the talks between the US and Taliban should be resumed. During the talks in Moscow yesterday, the Taliban delegation said that it was ready to continue dialogue with Washington.


Zimbabwe's longstanding President Robert Mugabe was given a state funeral today ahead of his burial. Dozens of African heads of state and diplomats from around the world were in attendance at the National Sports Stadium. President Emmerson Mnangagwa attended the event along with 11 African heads of state.

Mugabe died last week in Singapore. His body was taken back to Harare on Wednesday. He will be buried tomorrow.


Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has expelled five of its National MPs for taking membership of Sri Lanka People’s Party (SLPP) led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. SLFP, General Secretary, MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said the five national list MPs will be stripped of the party membership. All of them had taken SLPP membership last month even as talks are on between the two parties to form an alliance for upcoming Presidential elections. 

SLFP led by President Maithripala Sirisena has demanded a common symbol to contest the elections but SLPP is adamant on its flower bud symbol.


In Vietnam Open, India's shuttler Sourabh Verma booked his place in the men's singles final of the tournament. Sourabh defeated Japan's Minoru Koga 22-20, 21-15 in the semi-final clash which lasted 51 minutes. He will face Sun Fei Xiang of China in the summit clash tomorrow.


In Cricket, India clinched the Under-19 Asia Cup title, with a thrilling five-run win over Bangladesh in a low-scoring final at Colombo today. Defending a paltry total of 106, India dismissed Bangladesh for 101 in 33 overs. Left-arm spinner Atharva Ankolekar emerged as the star taking 5 wickets for 28 runs.
