Senior BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has filed his nomination from Varanasi parliamentary constituency. Senior leaders of BJP and National democratic alliance including Chief Ministers of various states were also present on the occasion. The Prime Minister is seeking a second term from Varanasi this time. Ajay Rai from Congress and Shalini Yadav, Samajwadi party candidate from the alliance are in the contest. A report:-

"Narendra Modi filed his nomination from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat. The occasion became the show of strength for NDA whose prominent leaders including Parkash Singh Badal, Nitish Kumar, Ram Vilas Paswan, Anupriya Patel were present in the collectorate. Many Union Ministers, Chief Ministers of states and senior BJP leaders were also present during Narendra Modi’s nomination. SUSHIL CHANDRA TIWARI, AIR NEWS, VARANASI."

Talking to reporters after filing his nomination, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said,

"ये जो प्यार ये आशीर्वाद काशी वासियों ने दिये हैं। मैं हृदयपूर्वक उनका आभार व्यक् करता हूँ और मैं सभी मतदाताओं से प्रार्थना करूंगा कि सभी मतदाता जहाँ-जहाँ चुनाव बाकी हैं। सभी चरण में बहुत ही शांतिपूर्ण तरीके से एक लोकतंत्र के उत्सव के रूप में हमारे देश के मतदाता मतदान करें।"

Earlier, addressing party workers in Varanasi, the Prime Minister said that Pro-incumbency wave is being witnessed for the first time in the country. He said, in the last five years, he has worked honestly for good governance.

The Prime Minister will also address rallies in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra later today. Meanwhile, campaigning has reached a feverish pitch for the fourth phase of General elections. 71 constituencies, spread over nine states, will go to polls in this phase on Monday. Star campaigners of various parties are making whirlwind tours across the country. BJP President Amit Shah will address a public meeting in Jalore, Rajasthan.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi is campaigning at Samastipur in Bihar. He will also address public rallies in Odisha and Maharashtra. Speaking at a rally at Samastipur, Rahul Gandhi said,

"25 करोड़ लोगों को पांच करोड़ महिलाओं के बैंक अकाउंट में हर महीने छह हजार रूपये। क्या आप जानते हो कौन से प्रदेश को सबसे ज्याद फायदा होगा, सबसे ज्यादा फायदा बिहार की जनता हो होने वाला है।"

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi's flight to Patna had to return to Delhi after experiencing engine trouble due to which his rally got delayed. Meanwhile, aviation regulator, DGCA has initiated a probe into the incident.

Speaking at the same rally in Samastipur, RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav said,

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is campaigning in Uttar Pradesh.

In Bihar, 5 Lok sabha constituencies of Darbhanga, Ujjiarpur, Samastipur, Begusarai and Munger will go to polls in this phase. Our correspondent reports that top leaders of NDA and Grand alliance are leaving no stone unturned to woo voters.

"JD(U) President Nitish Kumar and LJP Chief Ram Villas will address election meetings in Darbhanga this afternoon. Senior BJP leader Sushil Modi did road show in favour of NDA candidates in Munger and Patna Sahib. Addressing election meetings at Samastipur and Munger RJD leader Tejaswai Prasad Yadav exhorted people to vote in favour of grand alliance for secular government at the centre. While addressing rally at Karakat Rashtriyae Lok Samta Party (RLSP) Chief Upendra Kushwaha said demonization and GST have ruined the economy of the country. In Rajasthan, 13 Lok Sabha seats will go to polls in this phase. Our correspondent has filed this report.

"Concentration is on some of the seats among which Jodhpur is the most important one. Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot's Son Vaibhav Gehlot is Congress candidate there. whereas, BJP has shown trust on sitting MP and central Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat again. Apart from this, Jhalawar-Baran seat is matter of attraction, from where Dushyant Singh, son of former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje is in the fray as BJP candidate for the fourth consecutive term. BJP candidate and central Minister P.P. Chaudhary Contesting form Pali seat, where former MP Badri Lal Jakhar is main rival against him. Most of the seats in the first phase are from Mewar, Marwar and Hadauti regions, where irrigation and drinking water, the realization of the cost of crops to the farmers, employment and basic infrastructure development are the main issues. Singer Daler Mehndi today joined the BJP. He joined the party in the presence of Delhi BJP Chief Manoj Tiwari and Union Minister Vijay Goel. Union Minister Harshvardhan was also present on the occasion.


Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has said, the Congress game plan is not to stop the BJP in the general elections, but to come to power in Uttar Pradesh in 2022. Talking to a news agency, the SP chief said, his alliance with the BSP and the RLD is strong and his party has given up half of  their seats only to ensure that the BJP did not return to power again.


The Congress has said the five year tenure of the Prime Minister was not result oriented. Briefing media in New Delhi, senior party leader Rajiv Shukla said, the confidence of the BJP has declined. Mr Shukla said, the Prime Minister could not deliver any of the promises he had made in his 2014 election campaign.


The Supreme Court has refused to interfere with the Election Commission, EC's order stalling the release of a biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi until the 19th of May. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said, the issue is whether the movie can be exhibited at this time adding that the Commission has taken a decision and the court is not inclined to entertain the plea.

The counsel, appearing for the producers, had told the bench that the EC's order is contrary to the clearance given to the movie by the Central Board of Film Certification. The apex court had earlier, asked the EC to reconsider its decision after watching the movie and give its report to the court.


The Supreme Court has directed RBI to disclose information pertaining to its annual inspection report of banks under the Right to Information (RTI) Act unless they are exempted under law. A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao also directed the federal bank to review its policy to disclose information relating to banks under RTI.

The bench, which did not go ahead with contempt proceedings against the RBI, made it clear that it was giving a last opportunity to it to comply with provisions of the transparency law. The bench said it would have taken a serious view of the refusal by RBI to part with information under RTI. It said any further violation shall be viewed seriously. In January this year, the top court had issued contempt notice to the RBI in this connection.


The Enforcement Directorate, ED, has bid a total of 12 vehicles of Nirav Modi Group and Mehul choksi Group for approximately 3.29 Crore rupees. Both Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi are accused in the PNB bank fraud. Out of 12, ten vehicles are of Nirav Modi and two of Mehul Choksi Group. The ED had seized these vehicles from Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi last year. The vehicles were e-auctioned through Metal Scrap Trade Corporation Ltd.

Srilankan President Maithripala Sirsena has said, there are around 140 suspects believed to be linked to IS in the country. Addressing a media conference in Colombo, Sirisena said, many of them have been arrested and a hunt is on for the rest. He said, the country security forces are capable of wiping out terrorism from the country and restoring normalcy soon. Our correspondent has the details:-

"Security and intelligence officials in Sri Lanka are trying to join the dots behind the attacks and ascertain links of local terrorists with IS and other terrorist organizations. It is certain that many of the attackers received their training and support from foreign organizations but motivated by their own self-goals. The main perpetrator of attacks Maulvi Zahran Hashim is believed to have carried out the suicide attack in Shangrila hotel and DNA test is being carried out to ascertain it. Meanwhile, security remains all over the country and Colombo city heavily guarded. Prayers in mosques and churches have been canceled till further notice and efforts are on to nab the remaining suspects. SANTOSH KUMAR, AIR NEWS, COLOMBO."

World Intellectual Property Day is being observed across the globe today. Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind, inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names and images used in commercial activities.

"The day is observed across the world to spread awareness about the role that intellectual property rights like patents, trademarks, industrial designs and copyright play in encouraging innovation and creativity. It aims to increase people’s awareness and understanding of intellectual property. The theme of World Intellectual Property Day 2019 is Reach for Gold: IP and Sports. The National Intellectual Property Rights, IPR, Policy was adopted by the government in 2016. India bagged a gold and two silver medals at the Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok today. Boxer Amit Panghal picked up his second successive gold medal of the year, claiming the top honours in the 52 kilogram category. Panghal defeated Korea's Kim Inkyu Korea.  National champion Deepak Singh and Kavinder Singh Bisht in 56 kg category signed off with silver medals after close losses.


In IPL Cricket, table topper Chennai Super Kings will face third ranked Mumbai Indians in Chennai today. The match will start at 8 in the evening.
