Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that BIMSTEC is the amalgamation of India’s “Neighborhood First” and “Look East” policy. Mr Modi was addressing the inaugural session of 4th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit in Kathmandu this evening. The Prime Minister said the summit is a very good opportunity to take concrete steps to fulfill the aspirations and expectations of the people of BIMSTEC region. 


"यह चौथा शिखर सम्मलेन, हमारे जनमानस की अपेक्षाओं, आशाओं और अभिलाषाओं को पूरा करने की दिशा में ठोस कदम उठाने का एक  बहुत अच्छा अवसर है। इस चौथे summit का डिक्लेरेशन बहुत से महत्वपूर्ण निर्णयों को अपने में समेटे हुए है। इनसे बिम्सटेक के संगठन और प्रक्रिया को बहुत बल मिलेगा"


Mr Modi stressed upon enhancing connectivity among the member states. He said India’s North East region will have an important role to enhance connectivity with the BIMSTEC states.


"हम सभी विकासशील देश हैं। अपने-अपने देशों में शांति, समृद्धि और ख़ुशहाली ये हमारी सबसे बड़ी प्राथमिकता है। हमें एक दूसरे के साथ चलना है, मैं मानता हूँ कि सबसे बड़ा अवसर है Connectivity का - Trade connectivity, Economic connectivity का, Transport connectivity, Digital connectivity, और पीपल-टू-पीपल connectivity - सभी आयामों पर हमें काम करना होगा।


The Prime Minister said all member states have faced the menace of terrorism, transnational crimes and drug trafficking. He said that to tackle these problems, member states have to unite and create a proper legal framework.


"हममें से कोई भी देश ऐसा नहीं है जिसने आतंकवाद और आतंकवाद के networks से जुड़े ट्रांस-नेशनल अपराधों और drug trafficking जैसी समस्याओं का सामना नहीं किया हो। यह स्पष्ट है कि ये समस्याएं किसी एक देश की law and order समस्याएं नहीं हैं। इनका सामना करने के लिए हमें एकजुट होना होगा। और इसके लिए हमें यथोचित कानूनों और नियमों का frame-work खड़ा करना होगा"


Mr. Modi proposed creation of a special forum for women parliamentarians. He invited all BIMSTEC leaders as Guest of Honor at the international Buddhist Conclave to be hosted by India in August 2020.


Mr Modi reached Kathmandu this morning to participate in the BIMSTEC Summit. The theme of the two-day summit is ‘Towards Peaceful, Prosperous and Sustainable Bay of Bengal Region.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other heads of state and government of BIMSTEC member countries jointly called on Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari this afternoon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral meetings with  Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the sidelines of the summit today. Mr Modi and Mr Sirisena deliberated on various aspects of India-Sri Lanka friendship and discussed a number of projects undertaken by India in the Island country.


Addressing media persons, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said, Mr Modi reiterated that India is fully committed to assist Sri Lanka in anyway it desires in taking forward the developmental projects. 


During the bilateral meeting with his Bangladeshi counterpart, Sheikh Hasina, the two leaders reviewed the full range of India- Bangladesh relations and ways to boost economic and cultural ties.

The Law Commission has endorsed the proposal of simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly polls in its draft report submitted to the government today. In its report, the Commission said holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies is a solution to prevent the country from being in constant election mode. It has recommended changes in the Constitution and the electoral law to hold simultaneous polls. The panel said, such an exercise will, save public money, help reduce the burden on the administrative set up and security forces and ensure better implementation of government policies.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said demonetization fulfilled the objective of making India a tax compliant society. He said, the positive impact of demonetisation is more formalisation of the economy, higher tax revenue, higher expenditure and higher growth. In a Facebook post, Mr Jaitley, rejected the claims that demonetisation has failed as most of the currency came back into the banks. He said mere deposit of cash does not lead to a presumption that it is tax paid money. Mr. Jaitley asserted that the invalidation of the non-deposited currency was not the only object of demonetisation and the larger purpose was to move India from a tax non-compliant society to a compliant society. Mr. Jaitley added that post demonetisation about 1.8 million depositors have been identified for this enquiry and many of them are being slapped with tax and penalties.

 

Rejecting Opposition criticism, the Finance Minister said, the number of Income Tax returns filed almost doubled from 3.8 crores in March 2014 to 6.86 crore in 2017-18. He said, the income tax collections also increased from 6.38 lakh crore rupees in 2013-14 to 10.02 lakh crore in 2017-18.

BJP today slammed the Congress for criticizing the noteban decision of the government. Rejecting Rahul Gandhi's charges on demonetisation, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra alleged the Congress and its leadership are worried after the noteban as their unaccounted money has become junk. He said, noteban hit naxal activities and generation of black money.


The spokesperson also rejected the Congress President's allegations against the government on the Rafale aircraft deal. He said Mr Gandhi is repeating unsubstantiated charges which have since been countered by the NDA government.


Earlier, addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the only objective of noteban was to help certain big corporates. He also demanded constitution of a Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Rafale aircraft deal.

In Jammu & Kashmir, two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in  Bandipora district today. Security sources said, a cordon and search operation was launched following specific information about the presence of  terrorists in Parra Mohalla Hajin area. As the forces reached the suspected spot, the hiding  terrorists opened fire indiscriminately triggering a gunfight.

A delegation of political parties from Kerala met Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi today and requested him to provide more funds to the flood-hit state. MPs belonging to parties, including the Congress, CPI-M , RSP and the Kerala Congress(Mani) were part of the delegation.

The Centre is rushing 30 specialist doctors, 20 General Duty Medical Officers and 40 Malayalam speaking nurses to flood-hit Kerala. They will reach the state tomorrow. Health Minister J P Nadda today reviewed the flood relief measures with senior officials in New Delhi.

In another development, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has approved a proposal to replace LPG cylinders which were lost during the recent floods in Kerala at a subsidised rate.

Meanhile, a  special session of the Kerala Assembly was convened today to discuss the rehabilitation of victims and reconstruction of infrastructure in the aftermath of the floods. The session paid homage to those who lost their lives in the floods and also appreciated the efforts of thousands who have offered their selfless service in the rescue mission.


Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, it is the greatest disaster that the state has witnessed in a century.


"The chief minister said that rescue efforts of the first phase of survival is now complete, and the next is that of rehabilitation. In the current stage of  rehabilitation, restoration of electricity, drinking water, transport facilities and infrastructure is moving on course. About 59,296 people are still staying in 305 relief camps. Meanwhile opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala in the session alleged that the flood was caused by the unthoughtful activities of the administration. He said the  sudden release of water from the dams without taking any precaution resulted in the flood. Shamila AIR news Thiruvananthapuram".

Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today met Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi. Mr Kumaraswamy submitted a memorandum seeking relief funds for flood-hit areas in the state.

In Tamil Nadu, leaders across the political spectrum participated in a tribute meeting for late M.Karunanidhi. Paying rich tributes to the departed leader, Union Minister and senior leader of the BJP, Nitin Gadkari appreciated the boldness of Karunanidhi who opposed the Emergency rule.


Speaking at the function, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said Karunanidhi fought for social justice and worked against untouchability.

Lakhs of families, who have not been able to build their houses due to poverty are now able to get their own house under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna. In Rajasthan, over 3 lakh 86 thousand houses have been built under the scheme, so far around three lakh houses are under construction. Here is a ground report from our Jaipur correspondent:


More than 61 hundred crore rupees have been spent on this scheme, so far in the state. Thousand of the families of Gadiya Lohar community have been provided both land and budget to construct houses. These families are considered as followers of Maharana Pratap and lives in Caravan. One of the beneficiaries Deepa Gadolia from Banswara told that now their families is secured.


A beneficiary Narayaan Gadolia told that now they have received their own land.


Under the scheme, not only fund is being provided to build the houses, but also government is providing land to build the houses to landless families. Jitendra Dwivedi, AIR News, Jaipur".

At the stock markets, key indices fell for the second straight day, today. The rupee declined 15 paise to close at 70 rupees 74 paise against the dollar today marking the weakest closing level for the rupee against the US currency.


"The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange fell 33 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 38,690. The Nifty shed 15 points, to 11,677. At the forex market, the rupee slips 15 paise, to a fresh record low of 70.74, against the dollar. Gold climbed 120 rupees, to 31,200 rupees per ten grams in Delhi. And, Brent crude oil futures advanced 61 cents, to 77.75 dollars per barrel.Lalima Aneja Deng, AIR News".

India today clinched five medals - two gold,  one silver and two bronze in the on going 18th Asian Games.


4 x 400 metres women's relay team today clinched gold medal to maintain a remarkable domination in this event in the continental showpiece.  The Indian women's quartet of Hima Das, M R Poovamma, Saritaben Gayakwad and Vismaya Velluva Koroth ran 3 minutes and 28.72 seconds to claim the gold.  In 4 x 400 metres men's relay, Md Kunhu, Dharun Ayyasamy, Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Rajiv Arokia clinch silver with a timing of 3 minutes 1.85 seconds. Jinson Johnson won gold with a timing of 3 minutes 44.72 seconds in men's 1500 metres final.  P U Chitra bagged bronze with a timing of 4 minutes 12.56 seconds in Women's 1500 metres final.  Seema Punia bagged a bronze in women's discus throw.


In Men's Hockey, Malaysia defeated defending champions India 7-6 via penalty shoot-out in the semifinals today. India is currently placed 8th position in the medals tally with 13 Gold, 21 Silver and 25 Bronze. China maintains its massive lead at the top, with Japan second and South Korea third.

In Cricket, England were 171 for 7 in their first innings on the opening day against India in the fourth test of the five match series at Southampton. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohd. Shami claimed two wickets each and Hardik Pandya and Ishant Sharma one-one. Earlier, Hosts won the toss and and elected to bat.
