Tamil Nadu: Covid-19 tally crosses one lakh mark
AIR
In Tamil Nadu, the total number of Covid-19 cases has crossed one lakh mark with the state reporting 4329 new cases yesterday. Analysts say, the figure reached a little over 50-thousand in 103 days after the reporting of the first case in the state in March. In the next 16 days it doubled to one lakh.
Meanwhile, state chief minister Edappadi Palaniswamy has announced that in view of the Covid-19 situation, the free ration of dal, sugar and palm oil will be extended to the public for the month of July also through the public distribution system. This will be in addition to the free rice scheme that is already in place.
Furthermore, state health minister Dr. Vijayabhaskar has said bed capacity for treating Covid-19 patients is being increased in Chennai. More from our correspondent:
"Keeping in pace with the growing Covid-19 caseload, hospital bed capacity is also witnessing an expansion. It helps in reducing the mortality rate. For example, the Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai has now 800 beds to treat Covid-19 patients with moderate to severe symptoms and those with comorbidity conditions. The State Health Minister Dr. Vijayabhaskar has said an additional 400 beds are being established there, all with piped oxygen cannulas.
The National Institute of Ageing in the city is also getting ready to accommodate about 750 patients at a time with all the required support systems. At Tambaram Sanatorium, a Chennai suburb, another 500-bed facility is about to be dedicated for Covid-19 care.
Though the total infection has crossed one lakh in Tamil Nadu, 60 percent of them have recovered and the mortality rate remains about 1.35 percent.
