Sri Lankan President prorogues Parliament

@GotabayaR
Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has prorogued the Session of Parliament which was scheduled to begin from today.

A gazette notification issued last night said that the session has been prorogued for a month and the new session will begin in January.

The notification was issued following taking over of new President and government under Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. President is likely to address the new session when it convenes next month.

Meanwhile, the United National Party (UNP) has said, it is prepared to discuss proposed amendments to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution with the Government.

UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella told reporters that the 19th Amendment had the support of Parliament when it was tabled by the former Government, but if the current Government feels there are some clauses which need to be amended, the UNP is willing to discuss the amendments.

However, he said it was unlikely that the UNP will support fully abolishing the 19th Amendment.

President Rajapaksa has recently said that they will abolish the amendment if they get a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

The amendment has curtailed the powers of President with setting up of independent commissions and vesting some powers with Parliament.
