IFFI curates special section on Retrospective of New wave in Indian Cinema
@IFFIGoa
Reel life has been depicted on screen in many forms. New Wave of Indian Cinema is one of them. Recalling the great film makers of this genre, the Golden Jubilee of International Film Festival of India, IFFI in Goa has curated a special section on the Retrospective of the New wave in Indian Cinema.
The decade of the late 1950s to the late 1970s, saw a new breed of filmmakers charting new territory. Mrinal Sen, Mani Kaul, Kumar Shahani, Shyam Benegal & Adoor Gopalakrishnan were the proponents. The narrative, style and budget were different compared to the mainstream Bollywood. 12 films of this genre will be screened under the ‘India’s New Wave Cinema Retrospective’ in Goa. It opens with Ritwik Ghatak's Bangla film Ajantrik & Meghe Dhaka Tara.
Mrinal Sen's Hindi movie, ‘Bhuvan Shome’, released in 1969 is a story of a lonely widower and strict disciplinarian, and how a journey changes him. 1977 Tamil movie ‘Agraharathil Kazhuthai’ directed by John Abraham is another eye opener. It tells a story of what ensues when a donkey strays into a village dominated by upper caste Brahmins. Shyam Benegal's Bhumika and Ankur, Mani Kaul's Uski Roti and Adoor Gopalakrishnan's Swayamvaram are among other movies to be screened at IFFI in this section.
The films from the New wave in Indian Cinema blurred the boundaries between the documentary and fiction. No wonder, Mrinal Sen once termed them as the "Signature of the film maker". This retrospective in a way is an ode to the craft of these Indian filmmakers.
