Sri Lanka marks completion of 10 years of victory against LTTE today

Sri Lanka marks the completion of ten years of victory against the separatist war waged by LTTE today with the beginning of a four-day ceremony.

Army Commander Lt. Gen. Mahesh Senanayake said a series of ceremonies will be held under the theme ‘Dasawarshabhishekaya’ or ‘Decade of Peace’ to commemorate the soldiers who laid down their lives during the three-decade long war.

The main ‘National War Heroes Day’ event presided by President Maithripala Sirisena will be held today and will see the participation of the families of the fallen and missing from the tri-forces and the police.

The Army Chief said island-wide ‘Peace Walks’ are planned in all major cities for 22 May. It was on this day in 2009 that the LTTE war came to an end with killing of its leader V. Prabhakaran.

As per an estimate, more than 40 thousand people were killed in the war while thousands more disabled and displaced.

Human Rights Watch said that the government has failed to provide justice for the conflict’s many victims. It said the end of the civil war provided an opportunity to rebuild shattered lives and society and restore respect for rights and the rule of law but successive Sri Lankan administrations have frittered away this opportunity, failing to investigate atrocities by both sides and provide truth and reparations to the victims.

Sri Lanka has also been tense since Easter Sunday attacks in which nine suicide bombers targeted churches and hotels in the country killing over 250 people including 45 foreigners.
