In Sri Lanka, the Vesak festival is being observed with religious fervour amid tight security in the wake of Easter Sunday attacks.

The day is celebrated to mark the birth, enlightenment and death of Lord Buddha.  People are seen visiting  Buddhist temples and decorating their houses with Buddhist flags and lanterns.

In view of security restrictions, the number of food camps during Vesak is limited to 92 compared to around 6,000 last year. A total of 762 prisoners have been granted pardon to mark the occasion and were released today.

President Maithripala Sirisena in a message said the people must recollect the teachings of the Buddha to build a society with boundless peace by shunning all attempts to destroy each other for the greed for power.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said leading lives of mutual understanding and coexistence is the only way, as fighting over religious and cultural differences will wreak destruction all around. Police said they are ensuring maximum security of the public during the Vesak season.
