Cooperative societies should become conduit between govt, farmers: Venkaiah Naidu

@VPSecretariat
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has said cooperative societies should become an important conduit between the government and farmers to deliver the benefits of the schemes, launched by the Central government.

He was addressing a lecture on the birth centenary year of late Laxmanrao Inamdar at the University of Mumbai today. Inamdar is feted for his role in promoting the cooperative movement in the country.

Mr Naidu said, the Government has launched several programmes, such as Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, Krishi Sinchai Yojana, Jan Dhan and Mudra Yojana and the benefits of these schemes must reach farmers with active participation from the cooperative sector.

Lamenting the challenges faced by the cooperative sector in the country, the Vice-President underscored the need for active participation from youth and women, adding that the sector should be strengthened.

He said the sector has faced structural changes like dormant membership, lack of active participation by the members in the management, political lineages of the cooperatives, among other things.

He also expressed concern over mounting dues in the cooperative credit institutions, inadequate mobilisation of own resources, over-dependence on governmental and institutional support and lack of professional management which he said have proved harmful to the growth of the cooperatives.
