In Tajikistan, around 20 prisoners and two guards have been killed in clashes at a maximum security prison in the northern city of Khujand.

A security source today confirmed the number of victims and said a further six guards had been injured.

The source said a riot involving dozens of prisoners occurred last night and continued into today.

The riot had begun when prisoners seized cutting objects from a workshop in the prison in Khujand.

It is located north of the capital, Dushanbe and has seen prison breaks in the past.

Tajikistan government has yet to confirm the prison riot or the deaths.
