Maldives EC states it does not recognize President Abdulla Yameen as leader of PPM

Maldives Elections Commission (EC) has stated that it does not recognize President Abdulla Yameen as the leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). Commission member Ahmed Akram said at a press conference last evening that they still address the President as the ruling party’s chief advisor. 


Mr. Akram said that the commission does not acknowledge the decisions made at the recent PPM congress since there were 42 non-members present at the event and that some of those appointed to senior positions were also non-members. He said that the commission has decided not to communicate with PPM until its court case against the party is concluded. 

PPM has elected President Yameen at a controversial congress which was challenged by his half brother and former President Mohamad Gayoom. 


The matter is pending in court while the court has already ruled against case of irregularities filed by President Yameen on the elections held last month. He lost to opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih who will take over as President next month. 

Meanwhile, several people have come out with accusations of corruption against the outgoing President.
