Maldives SC defers its hearing on petition by Abdulla Yameen to cancel election

Maldives Supreme Court has deferred its hearing for tomorrow on a petition by President Abdulla Yameen to cancel the election last month in which he lost to opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Chief Justice Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi announced the court would decide whether to hear the testimony of secret witnesses at a final hearing tomorrow morning.

During the four-hour hearing today, the president’s lawyer argued the three witnesses could face serious threats if their identities were revealed.

The Elections Commission’s lawyer objected to allowing the secret witnesses in a case that affects the rights of a majority of Maldivians.

President Yameen is contesting the election despite publicly accepting his defeat and congratulating Mr. Solih a day after the polls.

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) led by President has accused the printer of coating ballot papers with an unnamed substance to make ink marks for Mr. Yameen disappear.

Elections Commission has denied any wrongdoing, including using any special ink.
