Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu gave the convocation address at the 4th convocation ceremony of the National Institute of Technology, Goa at Kala Academy, Panaji today morning. Mr Naidu appealed to young students to ride India's economic growth and participate in it, stressing that India is on the move and poised to become the third largest global economy.

He added that liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation present opportunities as well as challenges, and students should come up with innovative ideas to appreciate them. He asked engineering graduates to make the best of the opportunities available under new initiatives such as Clean India, Startup India, Digital India, Skill India, Stand up India, Amrut mission and Smart City Mission.

He asked the students to preserve India’s rich cultural heritage and nature. Mr Naidu cited poverty, terrorism, illiteracy and social evils as major challenges. He called upon students to respect their parents, native place, motherland or the country, mother tongue and teachers.

Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu presented degrees to 133 students of the National Institute of Technology, Goa at the convocation ceremony in Panaji. These include 86 students for B.Tech degrees, 42 students for M.Tech and five for PhD degrees. Goa governor Mridula Sinha also attended the convocation ceremony as a guest of honour.

She exhorted students to contribute to addressing societal problems. As a Swachch Bharat ambassador, she called upon students to make Goa the cleanest state of India. Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who could not attend the programme due to illness, was conferred an honorary doctorate by National Institute of Technology, Goa.
