Odisha Assembly passes unanimous resolution to name the newly-built Jharsuguda airport after noted freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai

The Odisha Assembly yesterday passed a unanimous resolution to name the newly-built Jharsuguda airport after noted freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the airport on Saturday. Earlier, in July, the Centre had asked the State government naming of the airport is to be considered only after a resolution passed in the Odisha assembly. 


Born on January 1809, in Sambalpur district of the State Veer Surendra Sai had sacrificed his life fighting against British East India company. Jharsuguda airport will be the second airport in Odisha after Biju Patnaik International airport in Bhubaneswar. 


Prime minister who will flag off the flight from the airport under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN, will also hold two public meetings at Talcher and Jharsuguda on the same day. Besides, this the Odisha assembly also recommended to the Centre to include the word ahimsa (non-violence) in the Preamble to India's Constitution. 


A resolution to this effect was passed in the Assembly on Tuesday amidst Opposition boycott. The leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra BJP MLA Pradip Purohit urged the House that the members needed more time to study the resolution.
