Flood situation continues to remain grim in many parts of UP; Heavy rains claim 23 lives

Flood situation continues to remain grim in many parts of Uttar Pradesh. Heavy rains claimed 23 lives in the state during the past 36 hours. Bundelkhand and western part of the state is now facing the flood fury. After the release of 5 lakh, cusec water from Matatila dam Yamuna and Betwa rivers are in spate flooding many villages in Hamirpur district. 

Due to heavy rain in western part of state and water coming from Uttarakhand Ganga and its tributaries are also flowing above danger mark in many districts including Bijnor, Moradabad, Sambhal, Kannauj, Farrukhabad, Kanpur, Unnao and Badayun districts. Relief Commissioner Sanjay Kumar told AIR correspondent that after rising of water level in Ganga, 17 villages were flooded in Unnao and 14 villages in Mawana Tehsil of Meerut district affecting more than 50 thousand people. At both places, more than 15 thousand people have taken shelter in relief camps. 

In Sambhal and Kannauj districts many villages are flooded after water released from Narora barrage in Ganga. Flood waters have also submerged swathes of farmland, with several hectares of land near river banks being eroded due to the strong current. As per central water commission’s report Ganga, Ramganga Sharda, Ghaqghra And Quano Rivers are flowing above the danger mark.
