PM Modi expresses grief on demise of US Senator John McCain

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief on the demise of US Senator John McCain. In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, people of India join him insincerely condoling the loss of a steadfast friend. Mr Modi said Senator McCain's statesmanship, courage, conviction and understanding of global affairs will be missed.

The 81-year old celebrated Vietnam war hero died last night after losing a battle to brain cancer. The six-term Senator was also a Republican Presidential nominee in 2008.  McCain had been battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer discovered in July 2017.

A fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, he spent more than five years as a prisoner of war after his plane was shot down. While in the custody he suffered torture that left him with lasting disabilities.
