PM Modi says, country loses the most with disruption in Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said, the government has the least to lose due to disruptions in Parliament and it is the country that loses the most.

Mr Modi was speaking at an event at the central hall of Parliament to confer the best Parliamentarian awards for the years 2013 to 2017.

Stressing on the effective functioning of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, the Prime Minister said, it is the duty of each parliamentarian to lend voice to the poor and the marginalised.

He said every MP should highlight the issues related to the common man in Parliament, in order to force the government to take steps for their welfare.

Mr Modi expressed disappointment that due to noise and chaos in Parliament, MPs are unable to speak and the loss is of the entire nation.

Speaking on the occasion, President Ram Nath Kovind said, MPs are not just representatives of a particular party or constituency, they are the trustees of the constitutional ideals. He said, people, especially the poor and the underprivileged, look upon their representatives and expect the solution to their problems.

Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu called upon the Opposition to be responsible, for the government to become more responsive. He said MPs must discuss, debate and then dispose of rather than disrupt and obstruct.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said the country's democratic values and parliamentary system are not only an example but also a source of inspiration for others.

Earlier, the President conferred the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award to Najma Heptulla for 2013, Hukumdev Narayan Yadav for 2014, Ghulam Nabi Azad for 2015, Dinesh Trivedi for 2016 and Bhartruhari Mahtab for 2017.
