Pakistan: Counting of votes underway in country's 11th general elections

In Pakistan, counting of votes is underway in the country's 11th general elections. According to reports, latest preliminary results available for 268 of 272 seats indicate that Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is leading on 112 seats, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is ahead on 65 seats. Former President Asif Ali Zardari's Pakistan Peoples Party is leading on 43 seats.

Pakistan Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Raza Khan held a press conference early this morning after media reports on massive delays in transmission of election results. He claimed that the election has been 100 per cent fair and transparent.

The Election Commission clarified that the only reason for the delay is a technical fault in the newly-launched Results Transmission System.

PML-N front runner Shahbaz Sharif in a tweet said, his party wholly rejects the results of the elections due to manifest and massive irregularities.

The voting, which was held yesterday, was marred by a suicide attack and poll-related violence that claimed at least 35 lives.

Polling took place was held for members of the lower house of Parliament and four provincial assemblies. Pakistan's National Assembly comprises a total of 342 members, of which 272 are directly elected whereas the rest are selected later through proportional representation among parties with more than five per cent of the vote.
