SC asks Centre to take immediate measures to check groundwater depletion in Delhi

The Supreme Court today asked the Centre to take immediate measures to check groundwater depletion in the national capital.

The apex court perused a NITI Aayog report which said that various authorities were passing the buck and shying away from their responsibility.

The apex court criticised the Centre, Delhi government and their civic bodies for not taking any step to tackle this serious problem.

The top court had on the 8th of May expressed grave concern on over-exploitation of groundwater in most parts of Delhi. It asked the authorities to avert a crisis.

The issue of depletion of ground water had cropped up when the court was hearing a matter relating to the sealing of unauthorised constructions in Delhi.
