VP stresses on the need to expand quality medical education
Vice President Venkaiah Naidu has stressed the need to expand quality medical education in the coming years to serve the rural poor. Addressing the students at the 30th Convocation of Dr MGR medical university in Chennai today, he said that though there were 479 medical colleges in the country and more than 67 thousand doctors enter medical profession every year, it was not sufficient for the population, especially in the rural areas.
The Vice President wanted the doctors to work mandatorily for three years in a rural area before their first promotion in service.
He underlined the need for more private medical educational institutions to cater to the need of training more doctors who are skilled in state of the art technology.
The Vice President said that the Government needs to regulate the Institutions and monitor their accountability and transparency in serving the public. He also wanted the private hospitals to adopt reasonable pricing in offering their services and avoid ambiguous tests and research unnecessarily.
Appreciating the Tamilnadu Government for being a pioneer in medical care, the vice President said that the Centre had introduced Ayushman Bharat scheme which will benefit 50 crore poor and vulnerable sections of the society.
He asked the youngsters to refrain from eating junk foods and avoid a sedentary lifestyle and adapt to a healthy practice of eating traditional foods.
Mr Naidu highlighted the importance of Yoga and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for introducing the practice to 172 counties in the world.
The Vice President gave away gold medals and awards to medical students of excellence.
