India, Sweden agree to strengthen defence, security cooperation

India and Sweden have agreed to strengthen defence and security cooperation.

They have also agreed on an innovation partnership and a joint action plan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement during a joint media briefing with his Swedish counterpart Stefan Lofven following bilateral talks in Stockholm this afternoon.

The two leaders had a productive exchange of views on bilateral and regional issues.

The two Prime Ministers also interacted with business leaders and talked about trade and business ties. Mr Modi said, Sweden remains a valued partner for the Make in India initiative. He highlighted various investment opportunities in India.

Earlier in the day, Mr Modi called on Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf. They exchanged views on strengthening bilateral cooperation across several sectors.

Mr Modi will hold a series of bilateral meetings with the counterparts of other Nordic countries- Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway and all the leaders will take part in the first ever India Nordic summit, being co-hosted by India and Sweden.

The discussions will mainly focus on innovative technologies especially relating to Smart Cities, renewable energy, growth, trade, investment and climate change.

With India keen on building closer relations with Nordic countries with pan Nordic view, the summit is likely to witness some significant outcomes.

The Prime Minister will address the Indian community today before leaving for London.
